The Kadazandusun people of Sabah will sacrifice buffaloes today as part of rituals to appease the spirits of Mount Kinabalu at simultaneous gatherings at the foothills of the mountain, The Star Online reported.
It quoted Kadazandusun Cultural Association executive secretary Benedict Topin as saying that the rituals would be held at the Kinabalu Park in Kundasang and Mamut in Ranau at about 8am.
At the Kinabalu Park, a bobolian (Kadazandusun shaman) will conduct the ceremony organised by the folk of Kampung Bundu Tuhan.
The report added that after the slaughter, the bobolian will hand over animal organ parts to two experienced mountain guides who will take them to a location at the top of the mountain.
The meat will then be cooked and shared among those attending the ritual.
At Mamut, Benedict said seven buffaloes would be sacrificed in the ceremony organised by villagers from around the area.
The Star Online said the ethnic Lotud community had held similar rituals to appease the mountain spirits on Tuesday.
This comes after several foreign hikers stripped naked and posed for photos on top of the mountain on May 30, an act which some locals say angered tribal spirits and caused a deadly earthquake.
The magnitude 5.9 earthquake which struck a week later shook the mountain, causing avalanches that killed 18 people, including four mountain guides.
