LONDON, May 23: UK prime minister David Cameron and British Muslims were united last night in condemning the “sickening” Woolwich murder.
Leading the nation’s shock at the bloody slaughter of a soldier, the Prime Minister called it “the most appalling crime”.
Mr Cameron — who abandoned a trip to Paris to fly back to London to chair a meeting of the Government’s COBRA emergency committee this morning — said: “People in every community will utterly condemn this attack.”
The Muslim Council of Great Britain said its thoughts were with the victim’s family following the “truly barbaric act”.
A spokesman said: “Muslims have long proudly served in this country’s Armed Forces. This attack is dishonourable and no cause justifies it.”
Suhra Ahmed, of the Islamic Society of Britain, said: “This is a horrific, unforgivable attack, the kind that should be purged from our society.”
A Muslim baker who lives near the scene of the killing was first to lay flowers there.
Ahmed Jama, 26, said: “Screaming ‘Allah-hu-Akbar’ and killing innocent people is nothing to do with Islam.
“As a local citizen I feel obliged to pay my respects to the victim and his family.”
Home Secretary Theresa May also called the killing “sickening and barbaric”, describing it as “an attack on everyone in the United Kingdom”.
And London’s Mayor Boris Johnson said it was a “sickening, deluded and unforgivable act of violence”.
The widespread condemnation came as it emerged security services had no warning of yesterday’s horror.
In the incident, two men attempted to behead a British soldier, hacking at him like a “piece of meat” in front of dozens of witnesses, before both were shot by police who took around 20 minutes to arrive.
After the killing, one of the men, believed to be a British-born Muslim convert, spoke calmly into a witness’s video phone.
Speaking with a London accent, holding a knife and a meat cleaver and with his hands dripping with blood, he said: “We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you until you leave us alone. Your people will never be safe. The only reason we have done this is because Muslims are dying by British soldiers every day.
“We must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. I apologise that women had to witness this today but in our lands our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don’t care about you. Do you think David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start busting our guns? Do you think your politicians are going to die?”
The victim, thought to be aged around 20, had reportedly been on duty at an Army recruitment office in central London and was on his way back to the barracks when he was murdered at 2.20pm.
It emerged that passers-by went to the soldier’s aid. One of the killers ordered that only women could tend to the body, not men.

Two men attacked another man near military baracks in London’s Woolwich on Wednesday, in what witnesses described to The Telegraph as a “beheading.” In a joint press conference with French President Francois Hollande, British PM said there are “strong indications” that the assault is terror-related. The French President added that the victim was a British soldier.
